[edit] Using the Template
{{Infobox_Glacier | glacier_name = NAME | image_name = IMAGE_FILE_NAME | caption = CAPTION | type = TYPE | location = LOCATION | coordinates = COORDINATES {{coord||||N||||W|type:glacier_region:|display:inline,title}} | area = AREA | length = KILOMETERS km (MILES mi) | thickness = THICKNESS | terminus = TERMINUS | status = STATUS }}
- Be sure to replace all of the all-caps words.
- Any of the items above can be safely left blank. Note that you may include an image with no caption, but a caption will not be shown if there is no image.
- Wiki links [[]] are fine in any of the Infobox fields.
[edit] Blank version
The following version is a blank that can be copied and pasted into articles. An example of how it may appear when most of the data is added is available at Gannett Glacier.
{{Infobox_Glacier | glacier_name = | image_name = | caption = | type = | location = | coordinates = {{coord||||N||||W|type:glacier_region:|display=inline,title}} | area = | length = | thickness = | terminus = | status = }}
As a note of caution, don't forget that glaciers lying south of the equator and east of the Prime Meridian to the International Date Line will be "S" and "E" in the coordinates section.
[edit] Microformat
The HTML mark up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue article across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Within the hCard is a Geo microformat, which additionally makes the coordinates (latitude & longitude) parsable, so that they can be, say, looked up on a map, or downloaded to a GPS unit. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.
hCard uses HTML classes including:
- "adr"
- "county-name"
- "fn"
- "label"
- "locality"
- "nickname"
- "note"
- "org"
- "region"
- "street-address"
- "vcard"
Geo is produced by calling {{coord}}, and uses HTML classes:
- "geo"
- "latitude"
- "longitude"
Please do not rename or remove these classes.
When giving coordinates, please don't be overly precise.
