[edit] Purpose

The professional cyclist infobox provides a quick overview of a professional cyclist, directeur sportif, technical director or team manager with the most sought after information in an easy to view sideframe to the article proper. It is intended for all professional cyclists across disciplines and the capability of including management details reflects the number of former cyclists in management roles. The infobox is intended for all current, retired and dead professional cyclists and management staff. It should not be used for amateurs.

Mandatory

• {{{ridername}}} — Common name, usually the same as the article name
• {{{dateofbirth}}} — Use the {{birth date and age|year|month|date}} template for living riders and {{birth date|year|month|date}} template for deceased riders for hCard microformat markup
• {{{country}}} — The current country the cyclist has or would represent at World Championship/Olympic events. Use of flag templates is discouraged under WP:FLAGS
• {{{updated}}} — Use the date, wikilinked for date preference

• {{{image}}} — Provide the image name without brackets; use Photo.jpg instead of [[Image:Photo.jpg]]

The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the person's details parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikipedia or via a browser tool operated by a reader, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Date-of-birth ("bday") parameters will only be included in the microformat if {{Birth date}} or {{Birth date and age}} are used in the infobox.

[edit] Density of information

Try to always consider that an infobox exists to support an article and provide a quick synopsis of important facts. This becomes vital when considering that the amount of space available within an infobox is significantly less than that available outside of it. Adding all seventy three nicknames and entire palmares that a rider might have is highly informative, but will defeat the purpose of the infobox.

[edit] Wikilinking

As per the manual of style entry on linking, years should not be linked as they do not provide much benefit to the user. However, date of birth should be linked to enable date preferences to work - use of {{birth date and age|''year''|''month''|''date''}} will do this automatically. Linking of other entries is to be discouraged as most of these links will present themselves in the article's introduction; linking them in the infobox adds clutter.

[edit] Units of measurement

As per the manual of style the rider's height should be in the units most common within the country they compete. For European based riders this is metric, and imperial in the U.S. Units should be abbreviated in the infobox and spelt out in the article text. Use standard abbreviations when using symbols such as metre is m, centimetre is cm, inch is in (not " or ″), foot is ft (not ' or ′). Put a non-breaking space (&nbsp;) between the value and the unit symbol, for example "1.98 m" not "1.98m". Do not append an s for plurals of unit abbreviations. For example, kg, in, yd, lb not kgs, ins, yds, lbs.
