[edit] About this portal
The "Portal:Information technology" is a collection of many special (non-article) Wikipedia pages (with prefix "Portal:") that attempt to present an organized view into hundreds of articles about the general subject of information technology. There are over 540 portals on other subjects (see general description: Wikipedia:Portal). This portal was begun in June 2005, but improvements are always welcomed, within the current structure, as it evolves. Although the portal pages are designed to help navigate into article groups, readers can still use the Wikipedia search option (at page left) to hunt articles by any words used inside an article. -Wikid77 (talk) 05:50, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Information Technology and Computer Science
This portal seems to combine IT and CS fairly extensively, which I think poses a real point of confusion for visitors. There are big differences between the two fields — I have a degree in CS and my brother-in-law has a degree in IT, and our areas of expertise hardly overlap at all.
If it's really supposed to be Portal:Information technology, I think it should be confined to IT; if it's going to include both IT and CS, it should be moved to a more topic-neutral location (such as Portal:Computing), or split into two portals (Portal:Computer science and Portal:Information technology). --bmills 17:23, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] New Title?
- Computers are used for both computational purposes and informational purposes. It's confusing to use a specific title like Portal:Information technology when both types of topics are included. The same problem would also be present if it is changed to Portal:Computing. I doubt Portal:Computer even makes sense since computing goes beyond just computers with analytical engine and calculators as well as since information goes beyond just computers with telephone and search engines. On the other hand, spliting into Portal:Computer Science and Portal:Information Technology would mean that things like cryptography may not fit clearly into one or the other. 3Laws 22:19, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

I removed the screenshot in the selected article section, as it was a violation of Wikipedia's fair use policy. Please remember that fair use images can only be used in the article name space (the main page though is an exception)--☆TBC☆ (aka Tree Biting Conspiracy) 09:14, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

On the front page of this portal it list Turing Award under categories. shouldnt that link to Category:Turing Award laureates. Just a thought, i havent been over here for very long and do not want to change this if this is the way its intended to be. --Altrock78 04:01, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Retrofit topic headers
16-March-2008: There hasn't been much discussion here over the past year, so I just grouped the older topics using level-1 headers as "Topics from 2005" (etc.) to emphasize age of topics. Older topics might still apply, but using the tactic of yearly headers to note the age helps avoid rehashing old news, without archiving any ongoing issues. -Wikid77 (talk) 05:50, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] About: About this portal
16-March-2008: I have retrofit the short topic "About this portal" near the top of the discussion to orient new readers to the concept of the portal (in case they miss "What is a portal?" on the overview page). That orientation blurb precedes the long discussion topics, and it alerts readers that hundreds of articles have been linked from these information-technology portal pages, to give readers some idea of how many related pages they face. -Wikid77 (talk) 05:50, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
