An information system is an arrangement of information technology used to capture, store, and distribute data to meet an organization's needs. This information technology includes computer hardware, operating system and application software as well as telecommunications and networking technologies. For-profit business enterprises, not-for-profit charities, social organizations and government agencies all rely on information systems to be effective.

- A Transaction Processing System captures information about mission critical activities as they occur, such as a library checkout system or an online book purchasing system.
- A Management Information System captures information about resource efficiency, utility or effectiveness.
- A Decision Support System uses captured information presented via models to help form a basis for decision making.
- An Office Automation System is oriented toward simplifying communication among organizational staff.
- A Knowledge Work System is used by technical professionals on a regular basis to create work products.
