[edit] Where's the definition?

Like a lot of the finance entries, this stub uses a lot of words to not really say anything that makes any sense to a layperson. If the goal of an encyclopedia is to educate the un-educated, this stub does a poor job. I've left the page with no better understanding of what an "index" is than when I entered it.
