Portal:India/Selected picture candidates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Selected pictures are images that add significantly to articles, either by illustrating article content particularly well, or being eye-catching to the point where users will want to read its accompanying article. Taking the common saying that "a picture is worth a thousand words", the images selected on Portal:India should illustrate an India-related Wikipedia article in such a way as to add significantly to that article, according to the selected picture criteria. For pictures that are already featured, if no objection comes in two days since the time of nomination, they will be promoted as selected pictures.

If you believe an image should be selected to appear on Indian Portal, please add it below to the New nominations section. Conversely, if you believe that an image should not be listed, add it to the Nomination for removal section. Old nominations are archived.

Nomination procedure

===[[Portal:{{subst:PAGENAME}}| ExampleName ]]===

[[ Image: Example.jpg |thumb| Caption goes here ]]

Add your reasons for nominating it here;
say what article it appears in, and who created the image.
Sign the request with ~~~~

<!-- additional votes go above this line -->
{{breakafterimages}}
  • Add   {{Portal:India/selected picture candidates/ExampleName}}   to the top of the list in the Current nominations section of this page.
  • Add  {{PISPC}}  to the nominated image's page. This inserts the indian selected pictures candidate template, to let the original contributor and other interested parties know that the image is up for voting.

If you have problems formatting your nomination, someone else will fix it, don't worry! If you wish to simply add your nomination to this page without creating the subpage, that is OK as someone else will create the subpage. The important piece of information is the pointer to the image, and the reason for the nomination.

Supporting and opposing

  • If you approve of a picture, write Support followed by your reasons.
  • If you oppose a nomination, write Oppose followed by your reasons. Where possible, objections should provide a specific rationale that can be addressed.
    • To change your vote, strike it out (with <s>...</s>) rather than removing it.

Votes added early in the process may be disregarded if they do not give any reasons for the opposition. This is especially true if the image is altered during the process. Editors are advised to monitor the progress of a nomination and update their votes accordingly.

If you feel you could improve a candidate by image editing, please feel free to do so, but do not overwrite or remove the original. Instead, upload your edit with a different file name (e.g. add "edit" to the file name), and display it below the original nomination.

Support Map created to the scale, contains important cities and road ways. Truely enclyopedic for a state of India whose page is largely neglected on Wikipedia. Map added to state page along with district pages and major towns for which pages exists. --gppande «talk» 11:22, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Failed an earlier featured nomination. But feel it deserves selected status. Appears in several articles. There is something in the image that makes it eyecatching.

How is the background blending with the clouds fatal? I think you are setting too high standards for Selected pictures by comparing them to Featured ones. --Lokantha 08:32, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Support - Portal India Selected pics were never meant to be only FPs. Image is certainly not professional grade but most certainly Portal:India grade. Sarvagnya 08:04, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Wonderful colors and composition. Depicts the subject in a great manner with a nice perspective. Resolution is a problem otherwise would have nominated for featured status.

  • Oppose I like the idea, but the image is both too busy and too low-res to be encyclopedic (in other words, to impart unambiguous visual information). Fowler&fowler«Talk» 07:54, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Reason:Kerala is famous for its greenery. Its backwaters, lagoons, pond and lakes are world famous. Kerala is a famous tourist destination. We have an FA on Kerala and this picture is really portraying the natural beauty of the state.

Strongly oppose. Too many problems. Background is bleached. Right side is out of focus, left side has slight purple fringing. The palm-trees are cut-off at the top. The picture is too anonymous. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 19:16, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

The picture drives home the truth that algae render Kerala its greenery.59.91.253.102 15:17, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Oppose. This image was taken with a strong blue filter or post-processed with a blue filter and, in addition, had the saturation level of its blue increased. The result is a fake blue. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 04:26, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Explanation: blue being a shorter wavelength than red gets attenuated faster in moisture (such as clouds or the humid haze that hangs over the water). So, it is unlikely that the far background (especially the farthest island) would appear that blue or bluish-green. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 09:45, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
  • Interesting. Thank you for noting that.--thunderboltz(TALK) 15:13, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Support. The explanation is erroneous. The islands in the far background aren't sources of light, so the argument that is used to explain the colour of the setting or the rising sun doesn't apply here. As there is a great distance between the point of view and the horizon, there is a significant amount of atmosphere present between the camera and the horizon, and Rayleigh Scattering gives everything a bluish tinge. Haven't you noticed how distant hills are often blue?
Also, I checked the image out, and it's fairly colour-neutral. Not much a blue filter has been used, though it does appear so. Emeldil (talk) 09:36, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
