Indonesian New Zealander

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Indonesian New Zealanders are New Zealand citizens and residents of Indonesian descent. As of 2006, roughly 3000 Indonesians lived in New Zealand.[1][2] Roughly 500 Chinese Indonesians fled to New Zealand after the mass violence directed against them during the Jakarta riots of May 1998 and the fall of Suharto; however, many were denied formal refugee status.[3] Some Indos (Eurasians of mixed Dutch and native Indonesian or Chinese Indonesian descent) who first settled in the Netherlands after World War II, unable to adjust to life there and feeling unwelcomed by the local society, migrated to New Zealand in the 1950s.[citation needed]
