The Indonesian Film Festival (Festival Film Indonesia/FFI) is a film festival devoted to exhibiting nominees for the Citra Award, the national film award for the Indonesian film industry.
[edit] History
- In 1955, 1960, and 1967, "Indonesian Movies Appreciation Week" were held in Jakarta
- In 1973, the event was renamed to "Festival Film Indonesia". The trophy/award is called Citra. From 1973 to 1992, the festival were held once a year.
- From 1993 to 2003: Because the number of good Indonesian movies had dropped significantly since early 1990s, the festival was discontinued. In 1990s, most Indonesian movie producers created low budget, B-class movies. The movie producers in Indonesia had suffered great loss of revenue because of rampant piracy. Since 1992, most high class and mid-range cinemas prefer to show American, Hong Kong and Taiwanese movies. Low budget Indonesian movies are shown only in budget cinemas, open theater cinemas, portable cinemas, direct to video or through TV stations.
- 2004 and 2005: The annual movie festival was revived.
