Indo-French are people of Indian-French descent or those who live in France and are of Indian descent. In 2000, there was an estimated 65,000 Indians living in France. A further 300,000 Indians were living in the French administered overseas territories of Reunion, Guadeluope, Martinique and French Guiana
[edit] History
A majority of the Indian community hails from the former French colonies in India i.e. Pondicherry, Mahé, Yanam, Karaikal and Chandranagore. Later arrivals were mostly Gujaratis from other Francophone areas namely Mauritiius, Seychelles and Madagascar.
A majority are engaged in small businesses. About 12000 are in the French government service while about 6000 are in the police and armed forces. Most of the Indians are middle class. With France opening up the IT sector for Indian professionals, there might be an influx of Indians coming to France over the coming years.
