Indica

Indica (or indicum) means "of India", or "Indian", in Latin and is applied to things connected with Pakistan & the Republic of India or South Asia:

• The specific epithets indica and indicum are used in binomial nomenclature to indicate species (or subspecies) of plants, animals etc thought to originate in, or associated with, India.
  • Examples of such species are Mangifera indica (mango), Juniperus indica (black juniper), Azadirachta indica (neem), and Lagerstroemia indica (crape myrtle).
  • Indica is a long-grain variety of rice (Oryza sativa subsp. indica), as opposed to the short-grain Japonica (O. sativa subsp. japonica).
  • Another example of a botanic subspecies is Cannabis sativa subsp. indica (a type of marijuana, considered to be a separate species, Cannabis indica, by some authorities).
• Tata Indica is the name of a car sold by the Indian company TATA Motors.
• Indica or Indika is the title of Megasthenes' account of his travels in South Asia as ambassador in Chandragupta Maurya's court.
• Indica is the title of Arrian's account of Nearchus' voyage from India after Alexander the Great's conquest.
• Indica is the Latinized title of Abū Rayhān al-Bīrūnī's Ta'rikh al-Hind (Chronicles of India).

Other meanings of Indica apparently lacking a direct connection with India include:

• Indica Gallery was a London art gallery in the 1960s. Set up by John Dunbar, Barry Miles and Peter Asher, it was the place where John Lennon and Yoko Ono met.
• Indica Records is a Quebec record label.
• Indica is a solo project from Eliad Grundland, the man behind the Israeli psychedelic trance group Space Buddha.
• Indica was a hardcore, alternative metal band from Midsomer Norton (UK), who were signed to Sugar Shack records.
• Indica is a pop/rock band from Finland.
• Indica is an electro-psychedellic band from Argentina.
