There are an estimated 18,000 people of Indian origin in Mozambique. Historical evidence suggests that Indians arrived in Mozambique even earlier than the Portuguese. The links between Mozambique and India go back to several centuries, and traders from Southern India probably visited Mozambique even before Vasco da Gama set on a journey to India. The original migrants were primarily Gujarati traders, both Hindu and Muslim. Some of their legacy still can be seen on Island of Mozambique, a UN World Heritage site that still has some mosques and a famous Hindu temple.Since 1975, that is Post-independence, many Indians have come to Mozambique to establish businesses and are a vibrant community.
