The Indianapolis-Carmel, IN, Metropolitan Statistical Area is the 33rd largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in the United States.[2] It was originally formed by the United States Census Bureau in 1950 and consisted of the Indiana county of Marion. As surrounding counties saw an increase in their population densities and the number of their residents employed within Marion County, they met Census criteria to be added to the MSA. Marion County, Indiana, is now joined with nine other counties to form this MSA. It is now the primary MSA of the Indianapolis-Anderson-Columbus, IN Combined Statistical Area which also includes the Anderson, IN, MSA of Madison County, Indiana, the Columbus, IN, MSA of Bartholomew County, Indiana, and the Micropolitan Statistical Areas of Crawfordsville, IN (Montgomery County, Indiana), New Castle, IN (Henry County, Indiana), and North Vernon, IN (Jennings County, Indiana).
