State Road 212 is a short north-south highway in LaPorte County in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is effectively part of a bypass of Michigan City, Indiana between U.S. Route 12 and the junction of U.S. Route 20 and U.S. Route 35. It is a straight, undivided four-lane surface road. The Indiana Toll Road and Interstate 94 have largely made this highway a road of only local significance but it does run directly to the west of Michigan City Municipal Airport. It remains essentially rural in character.

[edit] History

[edit] Bridge closure and repair

On August 10, 2007, officials of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) abruptly closed the bridge on State Road 212 which crosses the tracks of the South Shore Line (NICTD), effectively closing the road as a bypass. The closure followed a routine inspection which found severe corrosion, resulting in the bridge receiving a lower rating than the I-35W Mississippi River bridge which collapsed on August 1, 2007.[3]

An officially marked detour directs northbound traffic to take U.S. Route 35 north to U.S. 12 east, while southbound traffic is being directed to U.S. 12 west to U.S. 35 south.[3] Some local residents began using Meer Road as an alternative route.[citation needed] This north-south rural road intersects U.S. Route 35 starting 0.5 miles southeast of the junction with State Road 212 and runs 3.8 miles north, terminating at U.S. Route 12 just east of the junction with State Road 212.

The bridge reopened, after complete reconstruction, on June 12, 2008.[4]
