Independent Orthodox

An Independent Orthodox church is one that was originally part of an Oriental Orthodox Church or Eastern Orthodox Church but has separated from it. In India there are two Independent Orthodox Churches that were originally part of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

The Malabar Independent Syrian Church was established in 52 A.D. by the St. Thomas the Apostle. Excommunicated by the metropoiltan of the Malankara Church in 1772. Presently the church has a diocese and is in communion with the Mar Thoma Church in Kerala.
