Independent American Party of Nevada

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Independent American Party of Nevada is the Nevada affiliate of the Constitution Party of the United States. It is not to be confused with the national party of the same name. It was founded in the 1960s. [1] It is one of four Constitution state parties that has not changed its name to "Constitution Party" since the national party adopted that name. [2] As the Nevada party's name predates the national Constitution Party by decades, the Nevada membership has no current desire to change the name.

[edit] Tampa controversy

On April 21, 2006, in Tampa, Florida, the national party voted, by a vote of 57 to 41, against disaffiliating the party after state chairman and gubernatorial candidate Christopher H. Hansen and Colorado and Idaho candidates expressed support for abortion exceptions. Notable delegates voting in favor of disaffiliation included Michael Peroutka, Chuck Baldwin, John Lofton, Rick Jore, Marvin Richardson and Don J. Grundmann. [3] In response, nine state parties formally voted to disaffiliate from the national party, believing it to have unacceptably compromised on the issue of abortion.[4] They were:

  1. New York[5] April 23, 2006
  2. Oregon[6] May 2006
  3. Ohio [7][8] (no vote held)
  4. Missouri[9][10] June 24, 2006
  5. Maryland[11][12] June 27, 2006[13]
  6. Montana[14] July 2006
  7. Arkansas[15] September 9, 2006
  8. Alabama[16] March 2007

The Idaho [17] and Minnesota[18] parties held a vote of disaffiliation, but it was rejected. The Missouri party has since reaffiliated, while new state parties have since been organized in Arkansas, New York, Ohio,[19] and Maryland.[20] The Alabama, Maryland, Montana, New York, Oregon and Arkansas branches still exist, while the Ohio branch has become the Institute for Principled Policy.
