The Independence Courts, which were founded during Turkish Independence War and in early years of Turkish Republic, were special courts and were to judge the people who are against the system of the government.
After the law of the Independence Courts were made, the former Commander of Turkish Armed Forces, General İsmet İnönü, proposed founding 14 Independence Courts. But only 7 courts were established due to number of fourteen were considered too much. One month later, after founding another court in Diyarbakır were accepted, the total number of the courts rose up to 8.
Although the government insisted on keeping the Courts active, all Independence Courts -except the one in Ankara State- were dismissed in 1921 because of pressure of opponents and considering that the extra-ordinary conditions came to an end.
