Independence, Texas

Independence is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Texas, United States. Located twelve miles northeast of Brenham, it was founded in 1835, and it is the original location of Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Some of the features of Independence are: the Texas Baptist Historical Center, the home of Judge Coles, Baylor College Park, Old Independence Cemetery, the Margaret Houston House and Houston-Lea Family Cemetery. President Sam Houston was a well known member of the Independence Baptist Church. President Houston was baptized in Independence in 1854 and his wife, Margaret Moffette Lea, is buried there. [1]
