An independent bookstore is a bookstore that is locally owned and operated, as opposed to a chain bookstore. Independent bookstores often carry a different selection of books than national chains and significantly contribute to the availability of books representing diverse ideas.

Many independent bookstores in the United States are a member of the American Booksellers Association, a collective allowing them to share resources and have access to a comprehensive website, Book Sense. BookSense allows users to search inventory, order books, browse bestsellers, and see what bookstores are in their area.
