[edit] Background

The main feud heading in was Stone Cold vs. The Undertaker. The two had been feuding over the WWF title for months until the title became vacant thanks to Undertaker and Kane pinning Stone Cold at the same time vacating it. This led to a match at Judgment Day for the WWF title where Austin was the special guest referee between Kane and Undertaker, Austin refused to count and attacked Undertaker. They both then competed in the "Deadly Game" tournament at the Survivor Series both being eliminated. The next night on Raw Undertaker hit Austin in the head with a shovel. Vince McMahon then said if Austin wanted to be in the Royal Rumble then he would have to face the Undertaker. This led to a Buried Alive match where Austin or the Undertaker would win a spot at the Royal Rumble. Undertaker then hung Austin up on his symbol as a crucifixion angle.

The second main feud heading into Rock Bottom was for the WWF championship. One month earlier the Rock had won the WWF title in controversy at Survivor Series 1998 when he put Mankind in the sharpshooter and Vince McMahon made the match end. This led to Mankind being removed from Vinces Corporation. Mankind then received his WWF title shot thanks to then commissioner Shawn Micheals which lead to their match at Rock Bottom.

[edit] Aftermath

The Rock and Mankind would feud over the title trading it with each other several times before eventually forming the Rock and Sock Connection.

Vince McMahon ended up being in and winning the Rumble. Soon after that Austin beat Vince to take his #1 contendership in a Steel Cage match. Stone Cold would go on to win the WWF title at Wrestlemania XV defeating the Rock and continued the feud with Vince, The Rock, and The Undertaker into the summer of 1999.
