In the Grip of Winter is the second book of The Animals of Farthing Wood series. It was first published in 1981, and later republished as part one of the first "Omnibus".

The animals have just settled into their new home at White Deer Park when they encounter a very harsh winter. The Warden is taken ill and the white deer are hunted by poachers, who threaten the lives of the entire Farthing Wood community.
