In Dahomey is the first Broadway musical written by African-American people: music by Will Marion Cook, book by Jesse A. Shipp, and lyrics by Paul Laurence Dunbar. The production, produced by Jules Hurtig and Harry Seamon, was also the first to star African-Americans Bert Williams and George Walker. Opening on February 18, 1903 at the New York Theater, it ran for 53 performances. A second production with the same creative team opened on August 27, 1904 and ran for 17 performances at the Grand Opera House in New York.
