IMT-A stands for International Mobile Telecommunication - Advanced.
It is a new standard to be declared by the ITU for mobile communication systems which is considered as the next generation IMT-2000. IMT-Advanced is also known as "systems beyond IMT-2000" and will specify the 4G fourth generation of mobile communication.
Actual 4G networks as defined by ITU is not expected before the year 2010. As ITU is still in the process of drawing up the specification.
A new proposal under WiMAX is proposed by IEEE known as IEEE802.16m.
