imstar* was an Avatar-based instant messaging service that featured an extremely lifelike 3D avatar system. The software was a downloadable application, and was AIM-compatible. Like IMVU, imstar* had features usually found in MMORPGs, such as an inventory, and an internal economy. imstar* was discontinued in July of 2006 due to funding issues.
imstar* combined fashion, community, games and chat. Members of imstar* received a life-like 3D avatar (or character) they could completely customize from hair and body to facial features and skin color. A virtual mall offered branded avatar clothing, shoes and makeup. imstar* was free and all items were “purchased” with points (imBUX) not real money. Members experienced a virtual world where they could immerse themselves with interactive games, online community features, branded skins and entertainment content created by and for them. In addition to the integration with AIM, imstar* offered the ability to take a snapshot of your avatar for use on other websites, and for sharing with friends. A community feature included surveys and contests, user-generated content and message boards.
