I guess I should put some info here.
By the way, my 'nick' doesn't mean what you probably think it means. If you want to address me by my real name, you can call me Ian.

- Unix and Linux: I've been using Linux as my sole workstation and server OS since early 1996. I administer my family's small network with several Linux servers and Windows desktops.
- Photography: This originally overlapped with CG in some ways. I have an old 1.3MP digital camera (Kodak DC240) and a manual 35mm camera (Ricoh KR-5 super II) I bought off eBay in early 2005. I have a Zenitar fisheye lens and a few other lenses, including some old M42 lenses that I can use with an adaptor. I also have an old Soligor spot meter and a bulk film loader. I'd like to start developing my own film soon. Some day I'd like to move up to medium format with a cheap Kiev camera.
Check out my deviantArt profile page to see some of my photos.
- Programming: I mainly program in C/C++ and Perl nowadays. In my younger years I started on BASIC and Logo. I started using Turbo Pascal around year 10 in high school. I also started using Turbo C++ in (IIRC) year 11 or 12, but didn't get very far with it. I learnt C and C++ properly in University and it was around that time that I found DJGPP, a port of the GNU tools to DOS. I was also pretty good with x86 assembly in Uni, and the MIPS-like architecture described by Patterson and Hennessy. I guess I know a fair bit about the inner workings of CPU's.
[edit] Major contributions
Some of my larger contributions (in reverse order):
- Working on Tripod (photography)
- A big clean up of HD View - remove the unnecessary HTML <br> tags and a lot of marketing-type language
- Cleaned up Simple Common Gateway Interface
- Tidied up Fortia SP
- Add to OpenDocument Foundation a mention of Andy Updegrove's talk to Chris Lilley of the W3C, revealing that CDF is in no way a replacement for ODF. So why did they switch and make such a huge fuss? Who knows, but they closed up shop soon after.
- Undid some old vandalism on Kelvin
- Copyedit of Fujinon
- Clean up references in Child's Play (charity)
- References in UTF-8 too
- Rather extensive clean up of Manga Entertainment, including references/external links and whitespace
- Converting more external links to references in Photographic lens
- Copyedit of Larry Smith (economics)
- Clean up Digital Trends, remove cruft
- Clean up the 'Comparison with film photography' section of Digital photography - digital fanboys seem to think that photography was (re-)invented with the creation of the digital camera and keep sneaking in all sorts of incorrect 'advantages' of digital photography
- Remove a big list of commercial links from Application Lifecycle Management and clean up the rest
- Clean up of units in Caterpillar 797B
- Copyedit of Soyuz FG, mostly date formats
- Correct the misuse of "SATA II" or "SATA 2" in AMD Quad FX platform, Xpress 3200, and NForce 600
- Minor copyedit of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (film)
- Clear up the use of Rageh Omaar's name - Omaar is not his family name but his father's
- Clean up references and categories in Andrew Hansen, references in The Chaser
- Copyedit Zorki 4 and redirect Zorki 4k to it
- Copyedit Razer USA Ltd after Fuxmux's edits - remove 'Razer' from before every mention of a product name, move a section, and trim the overly detailed descriptions of every single product the company has ever made
- Help clean up new article L'Oceanogràfic
- Copyedit Guide number
- Convert many external links and simple references to using the citation templates in Orkut
- Big clean up of the references in Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold
- Copyedit of the trivia section of Agfacolor, which had movie titles and other name in ALL CAPS for some reason
- Copyedit of China Lucky Film
- Copyedit and reformatting of E-6 process, fixing up the references
- Move chronology from Single-lens reflex camera to History of the single-lens reflex camera
- Clean up Category:Photographic films by sorting articles into more specific sub-categories:
- Try to explain what is involved in Push processing
- Cleaned up Tri-X and added a film infobox
- Corrected information in Zone system
- Upload box artwork for Fuji Reala
- Start available light since a few photographic articles redlinked to it
- Create Ilford FP article, including box artwork
- Merge selenium toning and part of sepia tone into photographic print toning. Added some info from an Ilford document about toning
- Create Ilford HP article, including box artwork
- Uploaded low-resolution scans of box artwork for use on Velvia, Provia, and Ilford Delta
- Reformat the list of ingredients in E-6 process into two tables
- Bit of a cleanup of Razer USA Ltd and Windows key. I guess gamers aren't that good at writing.
- Create Ilford Delta and Ilford SFX articles
- Make a history section in Ilford Photo and add more history info
- A fair bit of work on Fujifilm Superia
- Copyedit on Mirror lock-up with lots of explanatory text
- Helped cope with all the vandalism on the Peter Overton article encouraged by Chris and Craig on their radio show
- More edits to Kiev-Arsenal (photo camera)
- Copyedit of Unix file types
- Mention the flammability of nitrocellulose photographic film
- Added a large chunk of info to Rage (TV program). I'm pleased to see a lot of it still there in one form or another.
[edit] Things I generally watch out for
- I've noticed that I don't like long pieces of text in parentheses. I usually either add a comma to continue the sentence, or start a new sentence. Only little notes should be in parentheses.
- As a native english speaker I do sometimes clean up text that appears to be written by someone having difficulty with the language. I've done this a few times for whole news stories over on WikiNews.
- Do the usual anti-vandalism things. I often keep an eye on my watchlist and check all of them. And don't forget to go look at their 'contributions' to see what else they might have done. I've caught quite a few vandals and link spammers, and helped clean up after them.
- Americanisms. Yes, I try to respect the rules about American/British spellings even though it annoys me no end to often see colour spelt without a 'u'. But lately I've been fixing the spelling of metric units, like "meter" instead of metre or the term "metric ton" instead of simply tonne. Hopefully it's acceptable to most Americans for these foreign words to use the international spelling.
