Imperial Theatre Augusta

The Imperial Theatre is a 853-seated [1] theatre located in Downtown Augusta, Georgia. The theatre opened on February 18, 1918. [2] It is named after the Imperial Theater in New York City.

The Imperial Theatre originally opened as The Wells for the presenting of vandeville and photoplays to the community by Jake Wells. It was very successful during its first week.

[edit] Celebrity at the Theatre

Many celebrities in that time visited and graced on the stage at the theatre. Charlie Chaplin appeared at the theatre on April 16, 1918.

[edit] Closure and Renaming

Due to over 3,000 cases of the spanish flu, the city proposed to close all venues. The Wells remained closed for another 2 years, until the building was renovated and the name was change to its present name.
