The Imperial Iranian Army was a branch of the Imperial Iranian Armed Forces and was principally concerned with land-based military operations. The Imperial Iranian Army was one of the most sophisticated army forces in the Middle East. It was replaced by the Islamic Republic of Iran Army following the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The last general to head the Imperial Iranian Army was General Gholam Ali Oveissi, who was gunned down in Paris in 1984. He was replaced by General Gharebaghi.
