  • Image is a picture of an article inside the permanent exhibit at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and as such it is prohibited under the regulations of the museum, which do not allow photography inside those exhibits. Uploader has been notified of these regulations, but has not taken action to remove the picture from the article or from Wikipedia. It is likely that the image also qualifies as a copyright violation, since the museum and its tributaries retain all copyrights to all materials presented. Since it is a blatant violation of museum policies, it is grossly inappropriate to include it in the museum's article and is further inappropriate to retain on Wikipedia under a GFDL license that allows repeated, unfettered use of the image. — Cumulus Clouds 03:48, 15 June 2007 (UTC).

  • Keep, it's a book cover. We routinely keep these, when used appropriately. The copyright-holder of the image has released it under a free license, and inasmuch as it's a derivative work, it passes our non-free content guidelines.   • Regardless of any copyright issues, the picture was still taken in violation of the museum's policies, and though I did note that they don't necessarily hold the copyright, out of respect for that policy and for that museum, Wikipedia should not maintain that picture on their servers and especially not in that article.   • Raster versions of vectorized images should not be deleted for a) GFDL purposes and b) in some uses the vectorized versions don't render properly. The appropriate solution is to move this to commons. -N 14:35, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

  • This picture was likely taken before 1923 (given that they guy turned 60 in '23 and looks to be about 45 in the photo. I'll see if I can track down when it was first published, but that seems harder. WilyD 14:17, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
  • The photographer is Henri Manuel - who seems to have been a very famous photographer in the relevent period - anyone know when he died? - I do, he was born 1874 and died 1947. See [1] WilyD 14:24, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

  • He's definitely younger than he is in his Britannica picture, which is from '23, so if it was published in the States around the time it was taken? I can't prove this. WilyD 14:42, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Okay, {{PD-US}} says:
  1. Works published outside the U.S. before 1923, except possibly in the 9th Federal Court District, then before July 1, 1909.
Is possibly the relevent public domain criteria. I strongly suspect that this image meets it, except for the 9th Federal Court District stuff. Beyond that, in 1866, French copyright law was life + 50, which'd sneak it past. France may have modernised their copyright laws to life+70, and if so may have retroactively applied it. Je parle un peu de français, mais there's no way I can hope to read and understand French copyright law. Anybody know? WilyD 20:47, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
France is currently life+70 (as mandated by EU regulations), but I don't know if it was applied retroactively or not. Either way, our servers aren't in France, so it doesn't matter. I haven't been able to prove it, but it seems very likely - the portrait was taken of him I would bet in either 1913 or 1914 when he was Prime Minister of France - seems unlikely it wasn't published. But I don't have proof yet. WilyD 03:54, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
Henri Manuel became the official photographer of the French Government of 1910 - the re-enforces my opinion that the photograph is from 1913/1914 - but I still haven't found it —Preceding unsigned comment added by WilyD (talk • contribs)

Observe 17 USC 101: "The offering to distribute copies or phonorecords to a group of persons for purposes of further distribution, public performance, or public display, constitutes publication."     • My nomination for deletion is because the rank has never had an official insignia, not because it doesn't exist. Not only that, the unofficial insignia that was used by Pershing was completely different than that shown in the image: four gold stars (there not being a five star rank in 1919).
