Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
|
Images and media for deletion (IfD) is for listing images which are unneeded. Images that have been listed here for more than 5 days are eligible for deletion if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion have been raised. Undeletion requests should be brought to deletion review.
If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider going to Wikipedia Media and Copyright Questions
To force the server to update this page immediately, purge the cache.
[edit] Instructions
[edit] What not to list here
I. For speedy deletion candidates, do not use this page; instead use {{db|reason}}. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both images are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken images, non-existent images, non-commercial, "by permission" images and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use.
II. Images that have no source, or have an unknown copyright, or are unused or replaceable fair-use, or are fair-use without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the image page:
- {{subst:nsd}} if an image has no source indicated
- {{subst:nld}} if an image has a source but no licensing information
- {{subst:orfud}} if an image has a fair use tag but isn't used in any articles
- {{subst:rfu}} if an image has a fair use tag but could be replaced by a free image
- {{subst:frn}} if an image has no fair use rationale and was uploaded after May 4, 2006
III. Redundant or duplicate images do not have to be listed here. Please use
- {{isd|Full name of image excluding the "Image:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other image is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
- {{subst:ncd|image name on Commons}} if the image now exists on Commons, or {{subst:ncd}} for images with the same name on Commons
IV. For copyright infringements, use Wikipedia:Copyright problems.
V. For other licensing issues, use Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images.
VI. Images that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead.
VII. If an image is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying them to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing them for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criteria 8 for Images.
[edit] Listing images and media for deletion
To list an image:
1 |
Edit the image page.
Add {{ifd|log=2008 June 9}} to the image page. If the image is in use, also add {{ifdc|Image:Image_name.ext|log=2008 June 9}} to the caption(s). |
---|---|
2 |
Create its IfD subsection.
Follow this edit link and list the image at the bottom of that page using {{subst:Ifd2|Image_name.ext|Uploader= |Reason= }} ~~~~ If the image has been replaced by another image, also list that image in your reasons, in the format " Image1.jpg - obsoleted by Image2.jpg". Please refer below for a list of common reasons. |
3 |
Give due notice.
Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using {{subst:idw|Image:Image_name.ext}}
|
State the reasons why the image should be deleted. Some common reasons are:
- Obsolete - The image has been replaced by a better version. Indicate the new image name (often abbreviated OB)
- Orphan - The image is not used on any pages in Wikipedia. (If the image is only available under "fair use", please use {{subst:orfud}} instead). Please consider moving "good" free licensed images to Commons rather than outright deleting them, other projects may find a use for them even if we have none; you can also apply {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} . (often abbreviated OR, not to be confused with original research which generally doesn't apply to images)
- Unencyclopedic - The image doesn't seem likely to be useful in this encyclopedia. Images used on userpages should generally not be nominated on this basis alone unless the user is violating the Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not policy by using Wikipedia to host excessive amounts unencyclopedic material (most commonly private photos). (often abbreviated UE)
- Low quality - The image is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns. (often abbreviated LQ)
- Copyright violation - The image might be used in violation of copyright. (often abbreviated CV)
These are not the only "valid" reasons to delete an image. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones.
Since abbreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image.
If you remove an image from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the image should be deleted. This is necessary because image pages do not remember the articles on which the images were previously used (see talk page).

- Tagged for speedy deletion with the rationale "The article that this was used in has been deleted and salted. The image has no encyclopaedic use." Sent to IfD for consideration. Angus McLellan (Talk) 00:01, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- Delete: I am the person who put speedy on it. It is a pencil drawing done by the person who uploaded it. It illustrates no encyclopaedic subject. The image rationale talks about sharing the copyright which suggests that the author does not understand the implications of putting it under the GFDL, although it is tagged as such. The backstory here is that there are two kids who are trying to write a web comic called Haven and are trying to use Wikipedia as a base for it. I don't think they are intentionally doing anything wrong but they completely fail to understand what Wikipedia is for. Their main article was deleted 4 times before being salted. If we let this stuff hang around then they may keep trying to recreate their article, confused as to why some but not all of their stuff gets deleted. If we get rid of it they are more likely to move their web comic to a more appropriate place to host the venture, which would be better for everybody. I have offered the author some advice on his talk page. --DanielRigal (talk) 09:55, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Sorry...
I changed it a bit so that hopefully it will be acceptable. I intend to use this image only for my user page, and I will not attempt to make any encyclopedia articles about it. And yes, I will find another hosting site. Thank you for responding rather than simply punishing me for reasons I don't understand like those bots.

- Wikipedia is not fully honouring Crown Copyright, otherwise the KJV would also be off-limits. But this would be under copyright under most reasonable interpretations of copyright law.
- The British government doesn't release their work into the public domain, it's under Crown Copyright. Kelly hi! 16:00, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Keep. It's a unique historic document. The transcript cannot convey the full impact of the original, including the handwritten withdrawal note, and the form. Moreover, the use on Wikipedia is within the publications requirements, so for such an important document I would claim WP:IAR. --Stephan Schulz (talk) 16:34, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

- Competes with copyright holder WP:NFCC#2. Can be replaced with free image of people from this organization per WP:NFCC#1. Kelly hi! 02:52, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- I don't see any competition. Also, the image may be replaceable for illustrating ZAKA, but not for illustrating the unique event it depicts. --Stephan Schulz (talk) 20:42, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- Delete as replaceable fair use; it's being used in a way that identifies KAZA (check the article), and is thus replaceable. giggy (:O) 07:01, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Delete, replaceable. The argument about the "unique historic event" is bogus, as the specific scene shown in the image is not discussed, in fact not even identified, in the article. It's being used purely as a generic illustration of what the organisation regularly does, not of anything special to that specific incident. NFCC #1 is also arguable - a picture of the back of a man bending over a body doesn't really further my understanding of who that man is and what his organisation does all that much. Finally, commercial competition might be an issue. The copyright holder (cropped out in our image and not currently identified on the description page) is "Bernard Lallzou, Rosenpress Agency" [1]; I haven't found out more about them, but if that is a commercial news agency, the image is taboo for us. Fut.Perf. ☼ 10:58, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
-
- That's an argument against the use of the image in the ZAKA article, not against the use in another article. I agree that if we do not cover the event in question, fair use is not a good argument. --Stephan Schulz (talk) 16:14, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Even if we did cover the event, we absolutely could not use a news agency photo per WP:NFCC#2. Kelly hi! 16:17, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Talking about coverage of the event is moot – we don't even know what event it's supposed to be, and it's never been claimed for any other article except the ZAKA one. Fut.Perf. ☼ 16:43, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

- Delete The image isn't properly sourced; we have no idea where it came from. It's not even dated. It looks like a news photograph, but it might be from a movie or TV show; the angle looks like it was a crane shot, taken from about ten feet up on a street. --John Nagle (talk) 17:08, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

In a general way, I agree with the above. In this specific context, my argument would be that the free images that exist are not of sufficiently good quality - (I've read some negative comments on a blog specifically refering to the wikipedia infobox photo) - hence I believe that images that are free but cast the artist in an unfavorable light and generate negative public feedback are less preferable to validly justified copyrighted ones that don't.

- Keep There are almost no images of Togoese agriculture OR retail trade, and, as according to Economy of Togo Subsistence agriculture is the main economic activity in Togo; the majority of the population depends on subsistence agriculture. Food and cash crop production employs the majority of the labor force and contributes about 42% to the gross domestic product (GDP). It would be desirable for Economy of Togo to expand to something like Economy of Senegal or Economy of Niger (which are tiny compared to Economy of the Republic of Ireland, a nation almost 1.5 million people smaller than Togo. Thus PD images applying to this are quite valuable, and encyclopedic. The rest of these "JEFO-" seem pretty useless. I would suggest this be moved to Commons. - The picture is licensed as {{PD-BritishGov}}, but I see no reason why. The pictures comes from the British Museum. I don't know whether a NDPB qualifies as “the United Kingdom Government”. Plus we cannot know if the picture was taken more than 50 years ago. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 08:54, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

- Not fair use. This is illustrative but not informative and the precise description of the scene portrayed is not essential to the reader's understanding of the subject. Unjustifiable. If this was permitted, one could equally argue for a screenshot of every location used in the episode.Troikoalogo (talk) 09:52, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
