Im is a common Korean family name derived from the Chinese surname Lin. There are two clan branches of "Im/Lim".
The first clan branch is the 수풀-림 (Supul-Lim) and its Hanja character is 林. The 수풀-림(Supul-Lim) branch consists of two large clan houses; the first is 나주 (Naju) and the second, which is the elder branch is 평택 (Pyeong Taek). Members of this branch often write their names as both 임 (Im) and 림 (Lim/Rim). However, members of the 수풀-림 (Supul-Lim/Rim) clan branch usually pronounce their name as 림 (Lim/Rim) rather than 임 (Im). The character 林 means "forest".
The second clan branch is the 맡길-임 (Matgil-Im) or 맡을-임 (Mateul-Im) and its Hanja character is 任. The 맡길-임 (Matgil-Im/Mateul-Im) branch consists of one large clan house called 풍천 (Pung Cheon) and a smaller clan house called 장혐 (Jang Hyeom). Members of this clan branch both write and pronounce their names as 임 (Im). The character 任 means "trusted/to bear, duty"
When 임 is romanized, it is usually spelled as "Im", although is sometimes spelled "Yim". When 림 is romanized, it is usually spelled as "Lim", or occasionally as "Rim".
Statistics from the year 2000 show that there were 762,767 수풀-림(Lim/林) and 172,726 맡길-임 (Im/任) in South Korea.[1]
