[edit] Route description
Illinois 171 follows Cumberland Avenue south of Chicago, becomes 1st Avenue until it crosses the Cal-Sag Channel, Illinois and Michigan Canal, and Des Plaines River. It then follows Archer Avenue and parallels the river along the eastern bank until it terminates in Joliet. Illinois Route 53 is the road that follows the river for some time on the western bank.
Route 171 is the main north-south road connecting important locations such as the Brookfield Zoo, major hospitals, and Sportsman's Park, one of Chicago's horse racing venues.
[edit] History
SBI Route 171 was established in 1924, and ran from Thomson to Illinois Route 78, along what is now called the Argo-Fay Route. In 1946, the modern Illinois 171 was designated from Lyons at U.S. Route 34 to Summit. This route was then extended twice; south to Joliet in 1968 to replace Illinois Route 4A and north to Illinois Route 72 at the Chicago/Park Ridge border in 1998 to yield the current route.[2]
