Ilfracombe Arts College is a comprehensive school located in the North Devon town of Ilfracombe. The college is unusual in that since the early 1980s, facilities available to students have included a television studio complete with editing suite.
Following lengthy fundraising and negotiations from 2001, the college was finally awarded specialist college Media Arts status in 2004 - one of only three colleges in the UK to achieve this (at the time), hence the recent renaming of the college to "Ilfracombe Arts College" from the original name, just "Ilfracombe College".
Currently, there are five periods in the school day, each lasting one hour. They are organised in this order - Tutorial (20 minutes), Lesson one, Lesson two, break (20 minutes) Lesson three, Lesson four, Lunch (55 minutes) and Lesson five. This system replaced three lessons in the morning and two in the afternoon in July 2006.
The college has had a good history in the outdoor pursuits. Ten Tors been a favourite with many year 10 and year 12 students competing in the 35 mile and 45 mile treks.
Ilfracombe Arts College has implemented a project to build a £3.4 million arts block, as an extension to the school. The existing arts department relocated to this department, allowing better arts facilities, and freeing up additional rooms for other uses in the school. At the Moment the school is changing its colour to a blue sky look, which will be seen in September of 2008.
To help students, the school also has a peer support and peer mentoring system.
