Ildırı
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ildırı formerly known as Litri (Greek: Λυτρι, Litri) is a pittoresque sea-side village depending administratively the district of Çeşme in Turkey's İzmir Province and located at about twenty-five kilometers north of Çeşme town and facing Chios.
The locality in ancient, Roman and Byzantine eras, was the spot of the important Greek city Erythrai. The ruins are situated within the modern-day village and the site was explored in depth in the 1960s by Professor Ekrem Akurgal, leading to precious discoveries, but has been left somewhat unattended since.
Despite being close to Çeşme, the village is not affected by the tourism boom that hauled up its administrative center, and a calm and introverted lifestyle prevails in the village, increased only by a number of summer house owners and inhabitants in their retirement, mostly from İzmir. The region of Ildırı remains one of the best kept secrets of Smyrniots.
