Ilanji is a panchayat town in Tirunelveli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

As of 2001 India census,[1] Ilanji had a population of 9423. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Ilanji has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 57%. In Ilanji, 10% of the population are under 6 years of age.
Geographically, Ilanji is a centroid of a triangle viz the corners are Sen Kottai, Courtallam, and Tenkasi each of which are located approximately 3km from Ilanji. So people called it as triplet city in Thirunelveli. It is also bounded by two great rivers which are therkaru and vadakkaru. Once upon a time there was a river that flowed through Ilanji.
There is a beautiful temple in Ilanji called Kumarar Koil (for Lord Murugan), which is surrounded by scenic views, dense trees, fields and farms. There are many temples in the Village which are Keela Kovil, Pillayar Koil, Perumal Koil and 'Sitrattu Veeramman Kovil popularly known as Sithai Amman Koil.
People who live in this village are predominantly of Saiva Vellala Cast. Those who live in Jubliee Road are wealthy and educated Tamil Saiva Pillaimar community.
One of the Oldest Persons living in this village is I S Sethuramalingam Pillai who is aged around 90 years. He was born in 1917 and served as the Headmaster in Ilanji Ramaswamy Pillai High School. He received the "Nalla Aasiriyar Virudhu" (Notable Teacher Award) from the State Government of Tamil Nadu in the 1970s. He lives at 40, Jubliee Road.
And also a best friend of the former, A. Eswara Konar, was born on the same period of 1917, living in Ilanji. He is a devotee of Lord Shiva, and also famous for his treatment of rheumatoid arthritis by Indian system of medicine. He lives in 65, Sakthi vilas House, Thangamman Koil Street.
A number of people from Pillaimar Community in Ilanji made significant contributions to the society through the public offices they held. To name a few; Rao Bahadur I.C.Eswaran Pillai (District Board Chairman), I.K.Subramania Pillai (Member of Legislative Assembly), I.A.Chidambaram Pillai (Member of Legislative Council and Member of Legislative Assembly), T.D.Arunachalam (Rotary District Governor of Rotary International District 321 consited of Rotary Clubs in southern part of Tamilnadu, southern part of Kerala and whole of Sri Lanka during 1975-76). His son T.A.Nellainayakgam will be the Rotary District Governor for the year 2008-09. He will be the First District Governor of the Roatry District 3212 comprising Rotary Clubs in six revenue districts in the southern Tamilnadu in 2008-09.
The following have served as Managing Trustees of number of Temples in and around Ilanji; I.A.Chidambaram Pillai (Senthil Andavar Temple Tiruchendur), I.S. Subbiah Pillai (Thirumalaikumaraswamy Temple Panpoli), G. Pichaiya Pillai (Thirukutralanathar Temple Courtallam), T.M. Arunachalam Pillai (Thirukutralanathar Temple), I.S. Kuttalam Pillai (Thiruilanji Kumarar Koil Ilanji), P.G.Pitchaiya Pillai (Thirukutralanathar Temple Courtallam).
I.S.Chidambaram Pillai and T.M.Subramania Pillai served as Trustees in Thiruilanji Kumarar Kovil Ilanji. I.C.Ahilandam Pillai is the Hereditary Trustee of Sitrattu Veeriamman Koil Ilanji.
I.C.Arunachalam Pillai and I.K.Nataraja Pillai served as Hony.Magistrate in Tenkasi.
I.S.Subbiah Pillai, G.Pichaiya Pillai and C.Muthukuraswamy Pillai served as President of Ilanji Town Panchayat with distinction. P.G.Pitchaiya Pillai is the President of Ilanji Town Panchayat.

there is a believe that the name is derived from a land which is surrounded by three river. like a "leave" in Tamil (ilai)as leave has branches like nerves. So it is named as ilanji. "enanji" means together.olden days it is called "enanji", day by day it changed to "ilanji"
