It was first performed on May 2, 1921 at the Teatro Costanzi, Rome.

This opera had been successful at La Scala in Milan and the San Carlo in Naples. Pietro Mascagni traveled to the U.S. in August 1924 to conduct his fairly new opera, Picollo Marat. He was accompanied by Guiseppe Radaelli, Agostino Capuzzo, Rino Oldrati, Irma Vigano, Maria LecerCasale, Adriana Boccanera, Enrico Nani, Francesco Novelli and Luciana Donagagio, singers.
