Ignatius Nemet Allah I

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mor Ignatius Nemet Allah I was the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch from 1557 to 1576. He was a learned mathematician and astronomer. He is mostly known for his involvement in Pope Gregory XIII's commission on the reform of the calendar. But because of his involvement in this commission, he was forced to abdicate by Islamic extremists and had to escape to Rome.[1] He is most likely to have joined the Roman Catholic Church and have died shortly after that in 2587.[2]

[edit] Education

While he was young, he went to Za'faran Monastery and became a monk there. He studied church sciences and Syriac literature and was ordained a priest.
