Ignacio Provencio

Ignacio Provencio is the discoverer of Melanopsin[1], a photopigment found in specialized photosensitive ganglion cells of the retina. He is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Virginia.

Provencio graduated from Swarthmore College in 1987. He went on to receive his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1996 before taking a postdoctoral position at Uniformed Services University. He is now an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia.[2]
