From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ignacio Piñeiro (1888–1969) was a Cuban musician, member of Septeto Nacional.
[edit] Biography
Piñeiro was born in Havana. In 1926, he was a member of the band Sexteto Occidente with María Teresa Vera, and they went together to New York.
On returning to Cuba, he founded the band Sexteto Nacional (National Sestet). This name was chosen because this group was a national band, in contrast to Sexteto Habanero, just in Havana. Later, adding a trumpet to the traditional sexteto format, this band became Septeto Nacional (National Septet).
Piñeiro played the double bass and wrote the main songs of the band. For financial reasons, he quit the group in 1935 and was replaced by the trumpet player Lazaro Herrera until the group disbanded in 1937.
The band was recreated several times from 1954 onwards under Piñeiro's direction.
He died in his native Havana.
