If You Give A Mouse A Cookie (ISBN 0-06-024586-7) is the title of a 1985 book illustrated by Felicia Bond. It is the tenth book written by Laura Numeroff, and is generally considered her magnum opus[citation needed]. Its plot deals with a mouse that is given a cookie, in return asking for various other favors, which leads back around to wanting a cookie.
The book was so popular that inspired the If You Give A series. The main character of this story, Mouse, appears in three others: If You Take a Mouse to the Movies, If You Take a Mouse to School, and The Best Mouse Cookie. It also inspired the sequel: If You Give a Moose a Muffin.
The phrase is referenced in the movie Air Force One, as an allegory to the dangers of giving in to terrorism.
Recently, this was spoofed in the show Robot Chicken. The mouse's desire for milk turns into an appetite for human blood, it becomes a vampire and makes a child and his mother (voiced by Kristin Chenoweth) its followers, culminating in the end of the world. This is revealed to be a story told by the child's mother to explain why she killed her husband - "He was giving a mouse a cookie."
