The song was produced by Mike Elizondo, Mark "Spike" Stent, and Maroon 5.

[edit] Single release

Rumors began circulating that "Goodnight Goodnight" would be the fourth single released from It Won't Be Soon Before Long[citation needed], when the song began receiving airplay in Canada. However, "If I Never See Your Face Again" was chosen instead, and was sent to U.S. mainstream radio on May 13, 2008.[1]

[edit] Music video

The video, directed by Anthony Mandler, premiered on May 13, 2008 on TRL and also features Rihanna.[2]. The video starts of with lead singer Adam Levine sitting on a couch while a clock ticks in the background. We next see Maroon 5 standing in a red room playing their various instruments while Rihanna is watching them. After a few lines of the song coming from Adam Levine she pulls the microphone of him and sings the next part of the song and from then on Levine and Rihanna sing their various verses while sharing the microphone. This is intermixed with Levine and Rihanna singing in front of a neutral background, on the couch where Levine is spotted at the start of the song, Rihanna is seen singing with her head resting on his knees. The viewer also sees Rihanna lying on a bed while Levine walks around the bedroom. The pair are also seen singing in a differnt room sitting opposite each other at a long table. Various subtle sexual and violent gestures are exchanged between Levine and Rihanna. Rihanna strokes the neck of Levine's guitar in the red room, a phalic gesture and is also seen scratching his face in the room with the table. She is also seen stroking herself in a sexual manner. At the end of the video, Levine walks up to Rihanna and pulls her hair jerking her head back.
