  5. Terminology. Mention the various terms used to refer to this phenomenon. A start: ideophone (mostly African) • psychomime (mostly Japanese) • onomatopoeia (a subset of ideophones) • psychomorph (Maduka 2001) • expressive vocabulary (Diffloth 1972 for Asian languages; Balto-Finnic) • expresseme (Slavic) • verbal image. I think ideophones is the preferred term since the Voelt & Kilian-Hatz (2001) volume.

The lead of the december 2004 version of this article was cited in the academic journal Oceanic Linguistics. The author suggests that 'one indication that the term "ideophone" has come of age is that it has recently (December 2004) been added to Wikipedia' (Bradshaw 2006:53). Full ref:
