iComic is a popular open source program used for automatically downloading webcomics from their respective websites using user-created scripts. It is currently only available for Mac OS X (Panther or later).

iComic boasts a wide array of features, including a tabbed interface, tight integration with Mac OS X, a standard Apple brushed metal interface, and the ability to search through comic archives using user added comments. It can also be used to save entire archives for easier, offline-capable reading.

Aside from included plugins, users can download or script their own Perl-based plugins for iComic, giving it the ability to view any webcomic, providing the user can obtain or create a compatible plugin. This approach often has issues, especially if the webcomic does not specifically support iComic; plugins are frequently broken by unexpected changes to the comic's webpage.

[edit] iComic Dashboard Edition

An offshoot of iComic, dubbed iComic 4.0 Dashboard Edition, was made available following the release of Tiger for use with the new Mac OS X Dashboard. It uses a revamped interface and a newer Javascript-based plugin system. The latest version, 4.0.11, was released on May 3rd, 2005.
