I have an issue with the assumption that the fish symbol was ever used as an identification method between Christians. I have gone through Flavius Josephus and found no reference to it. The earliest reference I can find of it being used in that fashion is in the 1880’s novel, Quo Vadis. Other than that I can find no solid archaeological proof that it was ever used other than to embellish tombs in the catacombs, and was always used on conjunction with the Loaves and Fishes. If there is any resource that I can investigate, I am open to changing my opinion that it is a modern invention.
