Ichigo Momomiya (桃宮 いちご Momomiya Ichigo?) is the main character of the manga and anime series Tokyo Mew Mew. She is known as Zoey Hanson in Mew Mew Power.
Ichigo was just a normal preteen girl who was on a date with Masaya Aoyama until her DNA is mysteriously merged with the DNA of an Iriomote Wildcat. Now she is the "leader" of a group of girls, whose DNA were also merged with that of an endangered species, called Tokyo Mew Mew. The Mew Mews have to save the world from Chimera Animas, the aliens, and the alien leader, Deep Blue. Originally, Ichigo wants nothing to do with the "Mew Project", instead wishing to simply spend time with her crush, Masaya. Later, she grudgingly accepts her fate, realizing what she is a Mew Mew and the importance of the task assigned to her.

[edit] History
Ichigo has some aspects of the typical magical girl heroine personality: sweet and caring, shy around her love interest, prone to overlooking things the more perceptive and more intelligent can see, and is overactive when she is mad or excited. Ichigo reacts very angrily whenever a loved one is hurt, and dislikes being treated like an object, hence her reaction to Kish. Ichigo tends to go dreamy and blushes when in the presence of her crush, Masaya, typically head over heels, she occasionally becomes confused with her feelings, and is prone to act rashly. Many times, she puts her own relationship before saving the world. Overall, she is a friendly person who's willing to give second chances to the people she likes.
She is injected with the DNA of an Iriomote Wildcat. Later she finds herself acting like, instead of a wildcat, an ordinary housecat and, remembering the dream sequence of a cat jumping into her body when she was injected, realizes something has happened to her.
Later, as the story progresses, her cat DNA begins to overtake her human DNA. When she is excited or nervous, she grows cat ears and a tail.[1] But if she gets very nervous or excited, she turns into a cat.[2] In the anime, when she kisses someone, she turns into a cat.[3] To turn back to normal, she must kiss someone again. Her crush is Masaya Aoyama[4][5]
At the beginning of Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode, Ichigo is revealed to be in London with Masaya, studying, which leaves the other members of Tokyo Mew Mew to fight the remaining Chimera Animas. She comes back to Tokyo later, just in time to save Berry Shirayuki from one of the Saint Rose Crusaders, but she turns into a cat shortly after. While in cat form, she says that her powers started coming back while on vacation (meaning that she must save the world again), but she can only be a Mew Mew for three minutes[6]
Ichigo's parents are Shintaro Momomiya and Sakura Momomiya. Her father, Shintaro, is irrational, overreacting whenever Ichigo is late, and disapproves greatly of Masaya Aoyama before getting to know him. Her mother, Sakura, is more understanding.
Ichigo appears in the first episode of Tokyo Mew Mew, with Masaya. The anime introduction of Ichigo is similar to the manga one, however there are some differences. The episode begins with a flashback to Ichigo asking Masaya to the exhibit, and Ichigo does not briefly meet the future Mews outside the museum in the anime. Also in the anime she, and presumably the other girls, are scanned for their DNA compatibility prior to being injected, rather than the injection of animal DNA being a missfire caused by an earthquake like in the manga. Ichigo goes outside after being scanned and there is a sudden earthquake. She is surrounded by a bright light and enters a dream world full of light, good feelings, and bubbles. One bubble pops and the image of a cat appears. Ichigo picks up the cat and the cat enters her body.
In the adaptation Mew Mew Power, Ichigo's name is changed to Zoey. After the infusion, instead of saying "nya~" at the end of sentences, she using various cat-related puns, most often - puns on the word "mew".
[edit] Weapons and abilities
Ichigo is the leader of the Mew Mews with love-based powers. Her emotion-fueled power transforms her into a catgirl or cat when she is suddenly excited and also gives her the reflexes of a cat.
Her weapon is called "Strawberry Bell Bell" (variations include "Strawberry Bell", "Strawberry Bell Bell" and "Sutoro Bell"). In the manga, Ichigo can combine her weapon with Mint's, Lettuce's, Pudding's, and Zakuro's weapon to make the StrawBell Bell Version Up (the four Mew Mews can power up her weapon in the anime, but its name doesn't change, and neither do Ichigo's attack names).[7] Later, Mewberry Rod is given to Ichigo, which changes her Strawberry Bell Bell into Mew StrawBell Bell. She can also use the Mew Aqua Rod in both the anime and manga. In the anime she is the only mew to use it, while in the manga all mews use the rod.
"Ribbon Strawbbery Check!" is her most common attack, and is used with the "Strawberry Bell Bell". Other attacks include "Ribbpn Strawberry Check Surprise!", "Ribbon Aqua Drops", and "Ribbon Double Berry Check!", a combination attack with Mew Berry.
The manga version of Strawberry Bell Bell does not actually have a bell attached to it. The bell only appears when Ichigo combines it with the Mewberry Rod (it looks different from the anime version). In À la Mode it always has a bell, looking like the Mewberry Rod and StrawBell Bell.[8] It is unknown why it looks like this, as her power came back recently, and she didn't permanently fuse the Mewberry Rod and StrawBell Bell.
In the anime Ichigo has the ability to talk to cats, even when she is not in her cat form and not even transformed into Mew Ichigo. It is later stated by Keiichiro that she can understand cats due to her cat DNA. When transformed into a cat, she also seems to be able to understand other animals, for example, dogs[9] and birds.[10] In the manga, she only seems to be able to understand cats when she is in cat form.
[edit] Voice actresses and alternate names
In the original Tokyo Mew Mew anime, Ichigo is voiced by Saki Nakajima.[11] In Mew Mew Power, "Zoey's" voice actress is Amanda Brown.[11] In the Italian adaptation, Mew Mew Amiche Vicenti, she is known as "Strawberry Momomiya" (Mew Berry in Mew form).
