IBM Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS) is a family of business continuity and disaster recovery solutions based on IBM mainframe technology. It is a service offering supplied by IBM, rather than a software product. GDPS runs as a Netview application, making full use of SA390. It monitors all the LPARs in the Sysplex, both OSs and Coupling Facilities, it also monitors the DASD whether synchronous remote copy techonology, PPRC, or synchronous remote copy techonology, XRC or Global Mirror, is being used to mirror the data.

The GDPS family includes solutions for single site or multiple site configurations :

Single site configuration :

- GDPS/HyperSwap Manager. It is a business continuity solution based on a synchronous mirroring technology (PPRC). It implements the HyperSwap technology that allow an application-transparent swap of storage devices.

Two site configuration :

- GDPS/PPRC. It is a business continuity and disaster recovery solution based on a synchronous mirroring technology (PPRC). It implements the HyperSwap technology as well as automation facilities for the restart of operating systems in case of DASD or CPU failure.

- GDPS/XRC. It is a disaster recovery solution based on an asynchronous mirroring technology (XRC). It implements automation facilities for the restart of operating systems in case of DASD or CPU failure.

- GDPS/GM. It is a disaster recovery solution based on an asynchronous mirroring technology (IBM Global Mirror). It implements automation facilities for the restart of operating systems in case of DASD or CPU failure.

Three site configuration :

This combines synchronous and asynchronous mirroring technology. The purpose is to offer business continuity in case of disk or site failure while maintaining disaster recovery capability at long distance.

- GDPS/MGM. It a business continuity and disaster recovery solution based on GDPS/PPRC and GDPS/GM.

- GDPS/MzGM. It a business continuity and disaster recovery solution based on GDPS/PPRC and GDPS/XRC.
