The IBM Academy of Technology is an independent body within IBM. It consists of around 300 of IBM's technical leaders from all lines of business. New members are elected by the Academy membership on an annual basis based on their technical leadership, technical contributions and accomplishments. The Academy conducts conferences, studies and consultancies. The work of the Academy helps set IBM's technical direction as well as improve its operations. Members and guests participate in an annual meeting to collaborate, plan, and hear from its board of governors, which is composed of senior IBM executives.
Members are expected to be active and participate in Academy activities which include leading topical conferences, academy studies and consultancies. Participation in Academy activities are open to the wider IBM community. The Academy's agenda addresses a variety of issues such as micro electronics technology, work force, service oriented architecture, system management, tools and skills, virtualization, high availability, estimation, chip design and virtual worlds. An IBM Fellow is automatically appointed to the Academy when appointed.
