The idea behind the name (xxxx1) is that this template marks the first time IAST is used in a text (i.e., the first word). Subsequent words may be introduced by template:IAST (a more systematic name for that one would be template:IAST2).
[edit] What is the benefit of the tag?
I notice that this tag is used on very few pages. Can someone explain the benefit of using it? There may be some technical issue that I am not aware of. If benefits cannot be clearly defined, perhaps the tag should be deprecated. Buddhipriya 21:12, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- The difference is: it includes the indication of the transliteration scheme (i.e., "IAST"). (Like the well-known
lang-xxtemplates.) It is reasonable to give such an indication (in a standard way, perhaps with a link to IAST), if it's the first time the scheme is used in an artcile. It was created because there was a mess in naming similar templates. So, IMO, there should be two variants: with an indication of the scheme--for the first use (like template:IAST1 now), and without--for subsequent uses (like template:IAST now.
