removed paragraph that was originally in the Molly Meldrum article which has now been merged here, as it is incoherent and needs npoving clarkk

Molly was involved in a TV roast by the Nine network. The Roast was hosted by "who wants to be a Millionare,s" Eddie Maguire and featured the footy show,s Sam Newman. Unfortunately Some of the comments made by Eddie were far too derogatory and the roast went horribly wrong, resulting in it being described as a "Gay Bashing" by Molly.

This article states that a publicly reported engagement to singer Lana Cantrell was soon revealed to be a hoax. Wasn't that Graham Kennedy who had a hoax aborted engagement to Cantrell (mentioned on Kennedy's Wikipedia entry though I have read about it in a separated book as well) or did Meldrum go down that path as well? Lana Cantrell wasn't enagaed to Molly Meldrum,the hoax enagagement was to Graham Kennedy.

The human name "Molly" is perceived as a feminine name. How common do males get called by names that the American English mind commonly percieves as feminine?? Georgia guy 18:59, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Meldrum is gay. In earlier decades it was common for gay men to nickname one another with a feminine name, hence "Molly". It was widely known that "Molly" was a nickname, he was frequently also named as "Ian Meldrum" in the press, etc. It is not at all common for a man to be called "Molly"! Meldrum is rather an unusual figure, the odd name being just one eccentricity. Asa01 05:20, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

I am for this move. Molly is what he calls himself, is referred to in the press and is what everyone refers to him as. Infact many would be unaware Ian is his first name. Similarly we don't call Doug Walters Kevin Walters.

I think this one is six of one, half a dozen of the other. Ian and Molly are both recognisable - while Molly is more in use in Australia, most references to him in the US are to Ian, since Molly doesn't translate all that well. Yes, there are references to him in the US - he was turned away at the airport for having the wrong visa when the "anti-terrorist" changes started kicking in. Hey, that should go in the article. While I have no doubt Meldrum is gay, I had a terrible time searching the web for a reliable source that indicated such. Does anyone have such an animal? A cite, I mean. :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 01:55, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
