Ian Slater is a fictional character on the soap opera All My Children. The character has serious health problems due to having been born very premature. He is the newborn son of Zach Slater and Kendall Hart Slater, and the couple's first child together. He is the younger half-brother of Ethan Cambias and of Spike Lavery.

[edit] Character history

Ian Slater enters the world soon after his mother, Kendall, is distraught over the news that her former best friend, Greenlee Smythe, has gone missing with her other son, Spike. This is after she trusts Greenlee to safely bring the boy to the hospital following her arrival. Kendall, as does most everyone else, jump to the conclusion that Greenlee has stolen the child — the child Greenlee once felt should have been hers. The Pine Valley residents are correct in their belief that Greenlee was all set to kidnap Spike, but what they are unaware of is that during Greenlee's dash for the border, she has a change of heart and decides not to steal the baby; she steers the car around, but it veers off of a bridge, Spike inside. Kendall, still no clue as to "where Greenlee has taken her son", is comforted by her husband and father to unborn Ian, Zach, as both worry for the well-being of Spike. Spike's biological father, Ryan Lavery, have "his men" and Police Chief Derek Frye look all over town for the little boy, determined that they will find him.

At the crash site, an unconscious Greenlee is in very bad shape, but Spike has miracously managed to come out mostly unscathed by the accident. As Greenlee awakens, she fears that Spike may be severely harmed. When she hears his cries, she does everything she can to get her badly-bruised body over to the child and to her cell phone to call for help. As she dials Ryan's number, her fatigue and injuries overcome her before she can tell Ryan where they are. Ryan yells over the phone at Greenlee that she had better not have harmed Spike. It is not long afterward before Greenlee and Spike are found. While Spike is wheeled into the hospital for a check of his vitals, Kendall, on her way to give birth to the boy's brother, is wheeled past Spike. Wanting both of her sons healthy, she cries for them. She soon gives birth to Ian Slater by caesarean section, deciding that she wants to stay awake through the whole ordeal, no drug medicine to make her sleep.

The doctors later discover that Spike is deaf due to the accident. Kendall scorns Greenlee and does not care for her apologies or that she was going to return Spike. She forbids Greenlee from seeing Spike, while she herself focuses time on him. Later, Kendall fears that there is nothing she can do for baby Ian, and therefore devotes most of her time to helping Spike while Zach oversees Ian's well-being. Zach often informs Kendall of the infant's condition, and Kendall regrets not being there for the boy, but still feels inadequate about caring for the baby she feels will sense that she is useless. Kendall is so angry at Greenlee for thinking that she caused Spike to go deaf from the accident that she sets Greenlee up to "re-kidnap" Spike and Greenlee runs away and ends up in a bomb shelter with Zach whom Kendall got in an argument with.

Ian was allowed to leave the hospital on Thanksgiving to go home to his family while his father Zach was still trapped in the bombshelter. He was recently found and the whole Slater clan is finally together. He meets his mother's sister and cousin.
