From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ian Montone is the manager of The White Stripes. His company also manages M.I.A., The Shins, The Raconteurs, Vampire Weekend, Autolux and Dredg. He was Jack White's best man in his marriage to model Karen Elson.[1] Before becoming the manager of The White Stripes, he was a lawyer based in Los Angeles, as a partner of Davis Shapiro Lewit Montone & Hayes, LLC, one of the country's largest music transactional law firms, with offices in Beverly Hills, New York and San Francisco. DSLMH’s client roster included Linkin Park, Britney Spears, Tool, Lil’ Kim, System of a Down, Usher, D12, Missy Elliott, White Stripes and Black Eyed Peas. Montone currently has his own management firm: Monotone Inc.
Ian A. Montone was raised in Portland, Oregon, graduated with a philosophy degree from Occidental in 1989, and a law degree from Vermont Law School in 1995, one of a handful of independent, private law schools in the country known for training a new generation of lawyers to work for the public good. Before working in the music business, Montone lived in Washington D.C. and worked for Development Alternatives, Inc. an international development consulting firm in Washington DC focused on market-based approaches to economic development in very challenging environments, including African and Middle Eastern countries emerging from political or military conflict. He has lived and worked in Europe and Southeast Asia and is obsessive about soccer and greatly enjoys reading the Weekly World News, a mock tabloid newspaper published by American Media Inc., which combines wire reports of strange news with in-house writings and columns, all fictional. Montone was part of a music industry panel: A Manager’s Survival Kit for Today & the Futute held on 17 Mar 2007. It was hosted by Steven Scharf of Steven Scharf Entertainment & VP of MMF U.S.(New York), and included Ben Dickey of Constant Artists Management (Los Angeles), Josh Neuman of The Ascot Club (New York), Heath Miller of Excess db Entertainment (Englewood Cliffs, NJ), Rob Lanni of Coalition Entertainment (Toronto) and Scott Austin of Authentik Music Group (Los Angeles). It was held at the Austin Convention Centre.
