"I Wanna Be a NY Ranger" was recorded in May 1998 at The Misfits machine shop and rehearsal compound in NJ, this rare recording features "American Psycho" and "Dig up her Bones" director John Cafiero on vocals. Originally developed for the New York Rangers hockey team, written by Cafiero and intended for The Ramones who (by the time the project came to fruition) had retired. The song is in the style of the punk interpolation of the military cadence "Airborne Ranger" inspired by the simplicity of Ramones classics like "Beat on the Brat."
Approximately 100 promo copies of the recording were pressed to CD. the song was written up in the publication Beckett Hockey Monthley, complete with Rangers' Wayne Gretzky on the cover. Beckett described the recording as "classic 'Fits, a minute and a half of hookladen power punk perfect for revving up the crowd."[citation needed]
Ownership of the song was never signed over to the Rangers when in retrospect, the team's marketing department expressed concerns, requesting the omission of the word "Danger" from the lyrics. Cafiero, along with the support of the Misfits, declined to alter the lyrics and the recording remained in the album Cuts from the Crypt.
The song surfaced at a time when Michael Graves (long time hockey fan and amateur league player) was rumoured to have quit the Misfits to attend hockey camp. Although the song was conceived long before these rumours, the irony remained and left fiends questioning a double meaning.
A condensed thirty-second version of the song appeared on the compilation Short Music for Short People on Fat Wreck Chords with Michael Graves on vocals.
